Engineering of Fish Traps Kit - River/Ocean Complete System | Years 3–10

$1,800.00
Description

Bring 65,000 years of First Nations engineering into your classroom. The Engineering of Fish Traps Kit invites learners to step into the role of engineer, designing, testing, and refining trap structures inspired by one of the most sophisticated and widespread examples of First Nations engineering on Earth, from Baiame's Ngunnhu on the Barwon River to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed eel aquaculture at Budj Bim.

Through seven progressive scenarios, students explore drag, gravity, friction, buoyancy, and flow while engaging with the cultural law of sustainable harvest: taking only what you need so populations thrive across generations. Traditional ecological knowledge and Western science are presented as complementary, honouring First Nations peoples as Australia's first scientists and engineers.

Developed in genuine partnership with the University of Newcastle's Science and Engineering Challenge team, the kit aligns to Australian Curriculum V9.0 (Science and Design & Technologies) and includes a comprehensive scenario-based Educator's Guide with facilitation prompts differentiated for Years 3 to 6 and 7 to 10.
