Description

This Science Week 2024, as we focus on the theme Species Survival: More Than Just Sustainability, it’s essential to highlight the role that cultural artefacts play in the survival and continuity of First Nations cultures. First Nations cultural artefacts are a living connections to Country, history, and the knowledge systems that have sustained First Nations peoples for over 65,000 years. From intricately crafted tools and weapons like boomerangs and spears (woomera), to ceremonial items and carved message sticks, each artefact carries deep cultural significance, storytelling, and knowledge of the land. Just like the ecosystems we aim to preserve, these artefacts are essential parts of the knowledge systems that promote balance, sustainability, and respect for the natural world. These cultural artefacts carry the stories, the knowledge, and the sustainable practices that ensure a balance between people and the natural world. By respecting and protecting these artefacts, we honor the continuity of First Nations cultures and the unique insights they offer into how we can live sustainably on this land. We had a yarn about the different types of First Nations cultural artefacts and their many uses with Kamilaroi man Buddy King.
